1. Letter: Growth of the plants and inner growth of human being

In EarthProgram I have just applied the laws of growth of the nature, particularly of the plants, to the personal growth of the human being. I use the tool - or the law -of analogy and correspondences for building the bridge between the outer and the inner world. Interdisciplinarity for me does not only mean to link together different sciences like natural sciences and psychology, but also to make bridges between the physical, the emotional and the spiritual worlds of the human being. I will share with you an example of how I do it.

Growth of the plants and inner growth of the human being:

* Stages of growth: You know that the plants grow. Everybody knows that, because it is visible to all. That is the beauty of my work: that it has to do with things that everybody sees! And it is so simple. And you know also that there are different stages of growth: the seed coming out of the soil, the stage of growing leaves, then the stage of flowering, then the stage of maturity. Then the harvest (for the agricultural crops for example). And it does not stop here: then there is the transformation: from wheat to flour, and then to bread, and then to nutrition in the body and then to energy for the body. (These are new dimensions of growth). And we can go even further: we can also say that it becomes action, love, will. These are all stages of growth. But of course, for the plants the growth stops at harvest time.

* Begin and end of stages of growth:And a characteristicum of the stages of growth is that there is always a beginning and an end, and you can´t go fully to the next stage if you don´t have reached the end of the previous stage: the flowering has to finish (such a sadness, is´nt it?) before the fruit can really mature. This is life. It is life to step from one stage to another one, to leave things, leave security, ideas, etc… In nature there is a scientifical reason for this necessity of ending a stage before beginning the next: it is called "the partitioning of carbohydrates": the energies have to be partitioned differently for each stage of growth. The plant produces with the photosynthesis carbohydrates (the sugar) and these carbohydrates are the building stones of the visible body of the plant. When the plant grows her leaves, she has to send her carbohydrates to the leaves, so that they can grow. But when it is time for flowering, most of the produced carbohydrates has to be sent now for the growing of the flower and so no more carbohydrates are sent to the leaves. For us human being, it means that we have to shift our energy from the old stage to the new one. If we don´t end something, the necessary energies for the next stages are not awailable. For us human being it is difficult to close a situation, but it is a necessary condition for the next step.

* Stages of inner growth of the human being: But what are the stage of growth in the inner worlds of human being? I distinguish three big stages of the inner growth in human being:

Think about the climate change, the ozon depletion and our responsibility in our way of living and producing. My opinion is that the environmental challenges of the present time have to do with this stage of growth: it is an existential crisis of growth of our planet earth, a leaving the previous stage of growth and coming into the next.

As an agrometeorologist and in my work now in the national weather forecast institute of Vienna, I see so many analogies between the climate, the weather and the psychological climate of our feelings: even the equations which describe the system-states of the weather can be applied. The rays of the sun are electromagnetical waves, and these rays are absorbed and changed when they pass into the atmosphere: the rays of our Self are deviated and changed when they pass our world of feelings: if it is cloudy inside us (cold bringing feelings for example), most of the rays of the Self are absorbed by the cloud and do not reach the earth. It is grey. How often is also our inner sky grey and we don´t see our inner sun? (we don´t have contact with our Self).

I could write many and many more things about this - it is a fascinating world of correspondences, but I think the letter will be to long, just for a homepage. I wrote about the theory, the concept, but the aim of this theory is DOING. It is working in the world of the causes to create new causes, so that we can have different effects on our level of personality. This is what matters me.

2. letter: I apply psychosynthesis to ecology and natural sciences (with socio-political implications)

See also 5. Letter: Assagioli´s Egg diagram of the human psyche in Psychosynthesis and the solar system

I apply psychosynthesis to ecology and natural sciences (with socio-political implications). The idea is: if I see things differently (with one more dimension - the transpersonal), then I will also act differently: and we needs actions! I am agrometeorologist (I am specialized in the influences of the weather on plant growth) and I am working at the national weather service in Vienna in the research department of weather forecasts (modeling of the atmosphere). May be you will think, what this has to do with psychosynthesis... Well: I made a bridge (an interdisciplinary link) between the nature inside us (as it is described by psychosynthesis) and the nature outside us (as it is described by natural sciences). (Macrocosmos = Microcosmos). I use the tool of analogies and I make the analogy between planet Earth ( = level of personality) and Sun (= self), the sky with its atmosphere (= transpersonal level, the plants and the human being.

Self = sun = sun

transpersonal level = sky (weather) = atmosphere

level of personality = plants (landscape) = planet Earth

I = gardener (gardener of myself!) = ??? humanity?

lower unconscious = soil = geology???

I base my researchs also on the writings of Alice A. Bailey and on the seven rays (book "a treatise on cosmic fire").

3. Letter: The exercise of seasons and landscape: experiencing the core of growth. The development and the changes

In all the exercises I offer the possibility to make a personal experience of some concepts of natural sciences corresponding to some qualities of psychosynthesis. - For example making the experience of the factors of growth: the climate (weather outside/weather inside. The sun), the soil (how do I nourish my self, I am well rooted? The experience of the quality of being secure), the water (do I water myself? Where comes the rain from?). - Experiencing the laws of growth: photosynthesis (from the photosynthesis to the psychosynthesis), energycycles (sun radiation: The energy flow from the Self to the I, the use of the energy of the Self for the I) - Making the experience of growth and the different stages of growth as a plant (as an individual).

The exercise I describe you, is for the work on the personality level: it is the exercise with seasons and landscape. It is about experiencing seasons in life and experiencing the core of growth: the development and changes.

Here the exercise of seasons and landscape. The aim of this exercise is to experience growth and the changing of seasons in my inner world and to explore my way of living within it: do I recognize when a new season is coming in my life? Do I accept to leave the previous season behind me or do I struggle for maintain it? How is my way of coping with changes?

1. Step: Visualization of a landscape: I ask the participants to visualize a landscape that they know. It is important that it is a landscape that they love and which they feel to be in contact with. (The emotional connection must be build up). Then I ask them to see all the parts, all the elements of this landscape (it is viewing our personality level and the differents elements of the landscape could represent our subpersonalities). And then I ask them to look at the season. Is it winter, summer, etc...? How do you recognize that it is this season and not another? Be always in contact with your feelings and be aware of your bodyreactions. 2. Step: Identification with the landscape. Identify yourself with this landscape or with a part of this landscape. Feel yourself as this part of landscape. How do you feel? What do you experience? How do you experience the season? What is the quality that you are coming in contact with? 3. Step: let the seasons start. The present season ends and the next comes. How do you react as a part of the landscape? What changes do you experience? What is happening in your environment? What do you feel? What is the quality that you are coming in contact with? 4. Step: Work with symbol. Let come up (do you say so in English?) a symbol for what you are experiencing. Maybe there is also a message for you. Then draw it and then write some notices. 5. Step: the next season comes. (Exploring my way of coping with changes). Identify yourself again with the part of the landscape. You experience how times goes on and how this season parts away and a new one comes. What do you experience? Do you change? How? Does change also your environment? And how do you feel? Are you sad? Are you happy and looking forward for the next season? Again symbol, draw, notices, 6. Step: And then so on for all the seasons: the third season is coming. Again the same process. Then the last season is coming. Again the same process. 7. Step: At the end the first season you had comes back again: how do you react? Do you recognize it or is it completely new for you? What is the quality you are experiencing? 8. Let emerge a symbol for the whole experience during all the seasons. This experience represents your life. Draw the symbol. Write notices. 9. Shifting to the mental level and grounding: Answer the following questions a) Could what I have experienced now, have something to do with my own life? If yes, what? b) Assuming that these images are a language, what would they tell me? How could I translate them in thoughts? c) Can I find a relation to my day-to-day life? If yes, what? Try to be so concrete as possible.

4. Letter: Meterology and the seven rays: Sorry, only german version available! Not yet in English. - This is just a very short summary.
Bibliography:
Bailey, A.Alice, A Treatise on Cosmic Fire. Lucis Press, Geneva.
Bailey, A.Alice, A Treatise on the seven rays, Vol.I, 1936. Lucis Press, Geneva.
a) 1. Strahl, Wille: Farbe rot.
b) 2. Strahl, Liebe/Weisheit: Farbe blau.
c) 3. Strahl, Aktive Intelligenz: Farbe gelb.

5. Letter: Assagioli´s Egg diagram of the human psyche in Psychosynthesis and the solar system
Vienna, 11.3.1997
Please, see also the link to psychosynthesis.

"For those of us interested in the evolution of psychosynthesis, I say, let us use our creative and intuitive abilities to envision the next steps for psychosynthesis both at theoretical and practical levels." (John Cullen, Psychosynthesis)
I like the emphasis of John on the practical side of psychosynthesis. I think that growing in our world of feelings and emotions, i.e. the process of growth in the psychological dimension of life (that is for me one of the purpose of psychosynthesis) is the element that we need at the present time for better acting in the material world.
I use the following analogy, taken from our solar system, to describe and explain the eggdiagram of Assagioli. I experienced, first myself and then with others, that this way touches very deep emotionally and sounds very clear at the mental level. It is not an alternative to the Egg diagram, it is just a way of explaining it better using the available knowledge of sciences and the applications of theirs laws.
I have no ideas how to draw a picture in an e-mail, so I´ll try to explain it just by using words. But please, think at the picture. Take the picture of our sun system. You see that at the center there is the sun. And at the periphery there is the earth and the earth is moving forwards in its orbit around the sun. If you draw the earth motion around the sun, you will see that the orbit of the earth motion is not a circle but an ellipse (like the form of Assagioli´s eggdiagram. The Egg lays horizontal, but stop at the sun. But drawing the orbit of the earth around the sun on both sides of the sun shows very well the dynamic state of the diagram).
Our higher self is like the sun: it is the center of our psyche that holds everything together. And it is the source of all the energies. Theses energies (the sun rays) pass through all the atmosphere (the cosmical one and terrestrial one) and finally arrives to the earth. In this analogy the earth is our personality level. Our personality receives the energy flow from the self and is hold by the self (it is attracted by the self like the earth is attracted by the sun) and it moves around the self. This movement is originating the seasons on earth. The ellipse form of the orbit causes that there are variations in the amount of solar radiation that the earth receives. It means that the amount of the energy of the self that the personality receives from the self, variates in time. What is between sun and earth correspond to the transpersonal level of our being.
To connect with our Self means to make the revolution that Copernicus and Galileus did, it is to accept the fact that our personality (the earth) is not the center of the life, but that it moves around the Self.
I show three pictures describing the differents point of viewing our life:
1) first, a photograph of a landscape, with the sky above us: I say: this is the way we are seing our life from the personality level. 2.) second, I show a picture of a landscape taken from the airplane or from a mountain and I say: this is the way of seing my life from the perspective of the I (an "higher" perspective with an inner distance).
3.) third: I show a satellite photograph of the Earth taken from the space (think at all the NASA photographs of the earth viewed by the astronauts) and I say: this is the perspective of the Self.
Now the earth has two principal motions: the motion around the sun (it is called revolution) and the motion around itself. This is called rotation. This is the spinning of the earth about its axis, which is an imaginary line running through the pole. And this produces the daily cycle of daylight and darkness. And here we can explain the lower unconscious part of our psyche as corresponding to that side of the earth, of our personality, which is in darkness, which at the present moment does not receive any sun rays. This explains to myself why there will be always a lower uncounscious.
And the middle conscious part is what I’m being conscious of, just in this actual moment. I am conscious of only a part of the whole planet (for example I am not always conscious of Africa´s situation or of the hunger in the world or the wars, or what is UN doing etc... or what is happening to the environment). (I think this could be very important for applying it to managers and to economical issues).
And what is the I? The I by definition is the unifying center of the personality level, the center which holds the personality together. And what actually holds the earth physically together is the force of gravity. In analogy to this what holds the psyche together is the I. Physically it is very evident that we are just one earth: in analogy to this we are also only one unified personality - and at the same time we are made of so different components: the variety of the continents, of the populations, of the social, religious, cultural worlds etc... existing on our planet. And this force of gravity holds every together: all together we are one. With all our subpersonalities.
I want to add two more points explaining this "egg-solar system diagram". It is about the two main forces Love and Will. I made an exercise myself identifying me with the planet Earth in the solar system. I could experience in this way the existence of three major forces: 1) As the earth I was feeling attracted very much by the sun: It was incredible how much I was attracted by it. In this way I made the experience of the attracting force of the self towards the personality. That force that attracts and holds together is called Love. Love is the attracting energy: it is the force that attracts the earth (the personality) to the sun (the self) and it is the force that attracts the earth (the personality) to its center (the I). At the same time I (the earth, the personality) was feeling a rejection towards the sun because I was also attracted by myself (the force of gravity, my I). So I experienced an attraction and a repulsion at the same time. And the incredible thing that I experienced was that this attraction and repulsion was what was defining my exact position (as earth) in the sun system - not too near and not to far from the sun, just being exactly in the position which enables life on earth. (not to near to the self: I would burn, not to far from the self: I would freeze). 2) As the earth I was feeling very strongly my rotation on my own axis. I was just rotating. It is the rotation force. I don´t know exactly what this could be the corresponding in psychosynthesis. I think this is the force of the opposites: the rotation of the earth on its axis is the cause of the day and night cycle. 3) The third force I experienced was the moving ahead in my own orbit around the sun: I was moving further in the space. It was like making a dance - I thought at a waltz dance. This force of going ahead, of movement in the space is Will. (This analogy is exact with the esoteric science of A. Bailey, but I don’t think it is here the place of discussing that).
And now to the practical applications: Facilitating and fostering growth. Facilitating and fostering growth is coping with changes. The changes in nature are induced by seasons and day and night cycles. Analogous to this Love and Will are inducing changes and growth at the psychological level. I think that we can create a lot of exercises to facilitate growth identifying ourselves with the earth and its place in our sun system and making the experience of the natural laws of growth. For example when reading the title of the workshop of Edith Stauffer "Search and Discovery: Awakening the Energies of Springtime Within Ourselves", I thought: that´s right: springtime means that the planet earth in its motion around the sun reaches a position where it is nearer to the sun (to the self), it means that now the earth receives a bigger amount of solar radiation then before. And this bigger amount of solar radiation at springtime induces the start of the incredible growth of nature. (Here in Central Europe spring is a very important season of the year). Awakening springtime energies in myself means thus to be closer to the Self and to receive (and to absorb!) more energy of the Self in my personality. (I don´t know what Edith Stauffer is doing in her workshop). And the planet earth reaches the "spring position" of its orbit just moving further. And this moving further is the energy of Will. That means for me that through my will I can bring my personality to be closer to the Self and receive in this way a bigger amount of energy of the Self: This has the effect that new growth starts in myself.
